Canton Strategic Holdings (CNTN) reported its first revenue from the Canton Network on 14 Aug, giving investors an early look at whether growing institutional adoption of the privacy-focused blockchain can translate into business for companies built around its ecosystem.
Canton's First Revenue Tests Institutional Privacy Bet
Canton Strategic is a publicly traded digital asset treasury (DAT) company built around the Canton Network. Formerly biotech firm Tharimmune, the company pivoted to Canton in November 2025 and sold its remaining biotech business in July. It now holds the network's native Canton Coin (CC) as a primary asset and runs businesses supporting the ecosystem.
The company reported $1.5mn in revenue during the second quarter, including about $1.3mn from its locking-as-a-service business and $191,226 from running a validator on Canton. Notably, it had no revenue during the first quarter.
Despite generating its first revenue, the company's posted a net loss of $19.3mn, or 8 cents per share, because of a $23.7mn unrealized loss on its digital asset holdings. The loss narrowed from the $47.3mn, or 23 cents a share, the company reported in the first quarter, on an unrealized loss of $15mn on its Canton holdings.
Canton Strategic shares rose nearly 4% following the earnings, trading at $2.03 as of 17:53UTC on 14 Aug. The Canton Network's native token, CC, was also up 4% on the day.
Privacy drives adoption
The results come as the network gains traction with financial firms and institutions over the past year, particularly around tokenized securities – traditional assets like stocks or bonds that are represented on a blockchain.
Unlike a lot of public blockchains, such as Ethereum, Canton allows firms to control who can see information about their transactions.
Experts say this could become more important as banks and financial firms move services onchain. One Bank for International Settlements (BIS) report published in 2025 described privacy as a "critical issue" for digital money and payments.
"We are pleased to see our disciplined strategy and operational focus pay off with meaningful operating revenue recognized in the second quarter," said Mark Wendland, chairman and chief executive of Canton Strategic Holdings.
Canton Strategic held about 3.7bn CC worth $523.4mn at the end of June, below their $584.1mn cost basis. However, it also held $37.2mn in cash, up from $12mn at the end of 2025.
Net loss widens
Canton Strategic is not alone in having its results swayed by moves in its treasury assets. Other DATs have reported large gains or losses this year depending on the how the coins they hold performed.
Strategy, the world's largest corporate holder of Bitcoin (BTC), recorded an $8.3bn loss on its digital assets in the second quarter, almost entirely driven by unrealized losses on its holdings in Bitcoin, the price of which has dropped 28% year to date. Other treasury companies, including firms holding Ether (ETH), have also posted big losses as the value of their assets has fallen.
On the other hand, Cypherpunk Technologies, which holds Zcash (ZEC) as its main treasury asset, reported a $46mn unrealized gain in the second quarter as the price of ZEC recovered. This followed a $77.6mn unrealized loss in the first quarter when ZEC's price fell.
Institutions move onto Canton
Canton Strategic is betting the Canton Network will play a key role as traditional finance companies move more of its operations to the blockchain. To date, the Canton Network has scored some recent successes, even if they haven't shown up in the price of the native token.
The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC), which provides clearing, settlement and other infrastructure for US financial markets, is currently working with Digital Asset, the company behind Canton, to put US Treasuries held at its Depository Trust Company subsidiary onchain.
Tradeweb, an electronic trading platform for bonds and other assets, also completed an onchain transaction involving tokenized US Treasuries on Canton in July, while JPMorgan announced plans earlier this year to issue its JPMD deposit token directly on Canton.
Meanwhile, Visa joined Canton as a super validator in March, saying lack of privacy can prevent banks and other institutions from moving more activity onto public blockchains.
Canton Strategic had an active super validator weight of 0.5 at the end of June, out of 15 approved. The remaining 14.5 is expected to become active in stages through the first quarter of 2028 as the company meets required milestones.
