Role Summary

We are seeking a highly experienced Weekend Editor, who will report directly to senior editorial leadership based in Geneva, Switzerland and help build out our platform to a 7-day-a-week product. You will manage the end-to-end editorial process, ensure the production of top-tier content, either producing content autonomously or guiding writers to produce timely, creative, insightful stories. If you have a proven track record in journalism—particularly within crypto and/or financial markets—or market intelligence and want to make a significant impact in a fast-paced startup environment, we want to meet you. 

We envisage a Thursday-Sunday work rota, although there is some flexibility in the total days/hours worked. The core duties will be during the weekend, especially the European mornings, including workflow that’s planned and scheduled prior to the weekend.

 

Key Responsibilities

Publishing Cycle & Content Management

  • Oversee the online publishing schedule on Saturday and Sunday, ensuring all content aligns with strategic goals and work seamlessly in a system with weekday editors in Europe and the Americas and other editorial staff on rotation.
  • Manage key content pillars (crypto markets, trading & asset management, TradFi policy/regulatory and technology), maintaining consistent quality.
  • Work with colleagues towards the end of the working week to determine the weekend agenda and collaborate on Features, Analysis and Opinion articles.
  • Monitor, decide and execute weekend news coverage, using your own news judgement and implementing Sandmark’s policies, standards and style.

Writing & Editing

  • Commission, edit and improve stories contributed by staff writers and freelancers to maintain exceptional standards for clarity, depth, and journalistic integrity.
  • Write breaking news stories and take responsibility to deliver articles autonomously, including on crypto market developments.
  • Oversee layout (integration with design, photography) to ensure our news and analysis product is well presented during the weekend in particular.

Collaboration & Editorial Process

  • Contribute to editorial meetings, especially weekend planning.
  • Shepherd staff writers and freelancers through the editorial process at the weekend.
  • Continuously seek operational efficiency while fostering healthy and productive interpersonal relationships with staff across time zones.
  • Cooperate and liaise with in-house analysts, as well as ensuring their work meets editorial standards and alignment.

Content Strategy & Distribution

  • Define compelling story angles and generate attention-grabbing headlines tailored to our target audience.
  • Stay abreast of crypto trends and wider macroeconomic, policy and markets topics to propose timely, innovative content ideas.
  • Ensure content is published in line with related SEO objectives and content analytics to enhance visibility.
  • Partner with marketing, product, and design teams to ensure editorial content drives user engagement and brand awareness.

Teamwork Leadership & Development

  • Manage multiple deadlines and adhere to a schedule comprising a combination of breaking news and longer form features.
  • Provide actionable feedback for junior staff operating at the weekend and coordinate with senior editorial leadership on the same.

Standards, Ethics & Compliance

  • Exercise strict content oversight and quality control.
  • Reinforce editorial guidelines, style, and voice; ensure these standards are upheld across all content.
  • Contribute knowledge of media law, ethics.

 

Qualifications

Experience & Expertise

  • Proven working experience as an Editor, with 8+ years in journalism, editing, or related roles including working autonomously.
  • Crypto/Finance Focus: Robust understanding of how news intersects with financial markets, as well as cryptocurrency, blockchain, and fintech trends—or a strong interest in learning.
  • Knowledge of financial media, wire services, other crypto-focused specialized media would help make judgements on summarizing and citing external content at the weekend.

Education

  • Formal degree in Journalism, Economics, Finance, or related fields is beneficial but not mandatory.
  • Advanced degrees or finance qualifications may be a bonus.
  • Extensive professional experience may substitute for formal education.

Skills & Tools

  • Outstanding English language writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Competency in using and scrutinizing use by others of AI-enabled writing and research tools.
  • Experience with office and publishing applications, project management tools.
  • Proven familiarity with SEO and social media best practices.
  • Fluency in English; other languages may strengthen your application.

Soft Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and multitask in a deadline-driven environment while showing consideration for others.
  • Ability to operate inside a dynamic newsroom setting.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, vital for cross-team collaboration with editors and analysts.
  • Curiosity and creativity to explore emerging, less-covered topics in the crypto world.
